8 Common Myths About Adulting
If you’re reading this, it’s likely that you are looking for advice on how to be an adult. Well, before you can even think about adulting, you need to understand some of the common myths that people have about it.
Here are a few of the most common myths about adulting:
1. You have to be wealthy or have a lot of money to live a good life as an adult.
This is one of the most common myths about adulting. Some people think that if you aren’t making at least $150,000 a year then there is no way you can live a good life. However, this is not necessarily true!
There are plenty of adults who live very well on a modest income or who don’t have a lot of wealth at all and are happy doing it. While money can definitely help you accomplish your goals, it is not required to live a fulfilling adult life.
And the biggest determiner of how much money you need to have a good life depends on the location in which you intend to live.
So don’t stress out too much about making a lot of money before you are 25; just focus on making smart financial decisions that will help you grow your bank account and keep you out of debt.
2. You have to work at a traditional office job to be considered a successful adult.
While it’s true that most successful adults have traditional jobs, this is not always the case. Some adults find fulfillment in entrepreneurial pursuits like starting their own businesses or running their own side hustles.
Others choose to do freelance work on the side while they are working a traditional job.
All of these options can provide you with a stable income and allow you to work on your own schedule. And while it may not be your first choice, being self-employed or working for yourself can be a great way for you to develop the skills you need to succeed later in life.
So don’t think that you have to be a traditional employee if you want to lead a meaningful life as an adult.
3. All you need to do to be an adult is to grow up.
This is mostly accurate, but there are a few key things you need to do as well. For example, you need to learn how to manage your own finances and set realistic goals for yourself.
You also need to learn how to socialize effectively and build healthy relationships. And last but not least, you need to make sure that you are getting enough sleep every night so that your body has time to heal and recover from all of the stress that you’ve been under.
So if you want to have a healthy and happy adult life, you need to start taking care of yourself today by taking better care of your health and getting plenty of rest.
Adulting can be a lot of work, and honestly, it is a lot of work, but it’s definitely worth it if you want to lead a happy and healthy life in the future.
As long as you focus on the practical things you need to get done each day and start thinking more critically about your plans for the future, you should be able to lead the type of adult life that you always dreamed of having.
4. Debt is Unavoidable in Adult Life
If you are a young college student struggling with student loans or just living paycheck to paycheck trying to pay bills and save for your future retirement goals it can be easy to convince yourself that you need to accept debt as the unavoidable cost of adulthood.
According to debt.com, about 30 percent of Gen Zers and 29 percent of millennials don’t feel financially secure with debt being a major part of that reasoning.
But that’s not always the case. And this is irrespective of your current earning capabilities.
While a certain amount of debt may be necessary to buy a home or a car there are times when you can avoid taking on too much debt for a purchase.
So if you think that you are stuck with a debt burden that you can’t get out of you should do some research and talk to a financial expert to see if there are any alternatives – spoiler alert there usually are!
5. Staying at Home with Your Parents Means Your Failing At Adulting
There is nothing wrong with wanting to stay close to your parents. In fact, most people do. And when you are still living at home it is perfectly normal to do so.
But that doesn’t mean you are failing at adulting. There are many reasons why people choose to stay at home with their parents well into adulthood including dealing with unemployment or needing more time to finish college.
As an adult, you owe it to yourself to do whatever you need to do to lead a happy life. And that includes taking care of yourself financially.
So if you choose to stay at home rather than live on your own that doesn’t mean that you aren’t the adult you ought to be.
Now, of course, there are some instances where people are living at home and not progressing as an adult.
But that’s not you, right!? I didn’t think so!
6. You Need a Job That Pays the Bills Before You Start Saving For Retirement
Money is important! You need to be able to take care of your financial needs and savings so that you can lead the kind of life you want. But that doesn’t mean you need a job that pays the bills before you start saving for retirement.
If you are able to live on the money you are making then by all means continue to spend and save as you will.
But if you can save some of your money and put it away for retirement you will have a lot more freedom in the future when you no longer need to work for a living.
7. You Need to Live In a Big City to Succeed As an Adult
A lot of people think that you have to have a big city career in order to succeed in adult life. This is simply not true and is one of the major common myths about adulting.
Yes, being closer to a metropolitan area can provide you with more opportunities to advance in your career if that is what you want. But there are plenty of opportunities outside of the big cities too.
You just need to know where to look. And there’s nothing wrong with living in a smaller town if that’s what you prefer. Most adults choose to live in small towns these days anyway.
They are a lot more affordable and honestly give you “more bang for your bucks” in today’s climate. There is nothing wrong with that as long as you are happy where you are living.
8. You Have to Have Your Own Place by Age Twenty-Five to be Considered an Adult
This is a pretty silly idea that people often have about adulthood. In the eyes of many people just having your own place makes someone an adult. But that’s not always the case.
Some people are still living with their parents well into their twenties. And that’s perfectly fine! That’s their preference!
Others have chosen a more nomadic life by either living in vans, AirBNBs, hostels, etc as they travel around the world.
Adults are living many different lives at different stages of their lives. You have to decide what is right for you based on your own circumstances. Don’t feel pressure to live a certain way because of other people who are doing it differently.
Do what works for you!
As you can see there are many common myths about adulting. Know that these are just a few of them. Yes, adulting can be scary but do not let the fear of adulting stop you from taking control of your journey.
Best of luck adulting!
