How To Engage In A Career Development Discussion
Actually, before we get to the 105 questions, I want to first talk about how you can go about setting up a recurring career development meeting with your manager. You should reach out to your manager and request recurring one-on-one meetings to discuss any questions, concerns, or areas of growth for you.
How often to have each “career conversation” is up to you and your manager and will also depend on how long you have been with your company. If you are new to the company then it would be best to definitely set up a 30, 60, and 90-day checkpoint with your boss. This will give you multiple checkpoints during your onboarding period to ask good questions and get feedback.
The 105 questions that I have gathered for you in this article are geared towards those 30-90 day mark with some questions being geared towards check-ins as you continue to progress in the job.
After your initial onboarding periods, I would recommend having a career development discussion every 6 months or at least annually. Now, granted not all managers are good managers and if your is more on the sucky side then it might be a good idea to seek out another manager or more seasoned employee to be your surrogate.
