Do These 13 Things to Prepare for Your Freshman Year
Welcome to your freshman year of college! You have successfully completed your high school years and have come a long way. You are no longer a high school freshman and are instead transitioning into a new era of life. This is an exciting time for you as you transition from being a high school student to becoming a member of the college community. Here are some important tips to help you prepare for your freshman year of college and college life in general.
Get Organized For Your First Year of College
Get organized. This is not just organizing your dorm room and making sure you aren’t trashing the residence halls. It is much more than that. Ideally, you want to build systems and checkpoints into your college life in order to increase your ability to manage what is to come. You should do this as soon as possible to best prepare for your freshman year. If you are reading this while in your senior year of your high school career then excellent – you are already ahead of the curve. Take what is being shared here and make a plan to enact it the first time you step foot onto your college campus.
Regardless, though. of your current school year, it’s important that you stay organized during your studies so that you can stay on top of everything that you need to do. One of the best ways to do this is to create a daily to-do list that includes all of the things that you need to get done for the day.
You may also find it helpful to use a planner to keep track of all of your assignments and upcoming deadlines. This will make it easier for you to stay on task and help you remain focused while you’re studying.

Establish Good Time Management Skills
Continuing the idea of organization, good time management skills are of the utmost importance as college students. The best time to establish good skills is the fall semester of your freshman year and from there continue to develop and refine those skills. A first step would be to try using a calendar to keep track of when exams are, which classes are important to you, when your midterms and finals are scheduled, and any other special events coming up. Most of this information is given to you at the beginning of the semester and can be found in your course syllabus. Take the time to review these documents and plan accordingly. Setting goals for yourself at the beginning of the semester can also be extremely helpful. By doing this, you can stay motivated and on track throughout the semester.
Make sure you also set aside dedicated time for studying and other activities you want or need to participate in during the semester. The earlier you can develop this detailed calendar, the better prepared and organized you will be for a smooth transition into your first year of college.
Make Time For Studying To Achieve Academic Success
It’s crucial to take some time every day to study for your classes so that you can maintain good grades and stay ahead of your college courses. In order to study effectively, it’s important that you dedicate time to studying each day and avoid distractions such as television and social media during your allotted study time.
It also helps to create a distraction-free environment where you can concentrate and focus on studying without any interruptions. The library is a well-known area for studying. Depending on where you live you might have a local coffee shop or bookstore at your disposal. Go to them and see if working from there helps you focus.
Now, not everyone does well studying alone. If you are someone who is better in a group, seek out a study group and attend regularly. Participating in a study group is also very helpful when it comes to having a defined system of academic support. Plus, you can learn from your peers and bounce ideas off of each other to help strengthen your understanding of the material. Side note – If you end up having a strong understanding of the material and like explaining it, you should consider being a TA once you enter your junior year.

Don’t Over-Schedule Yourself
It’s important to manage your time wisely so that you don’t get overwhelmed with all of the work you have to do. If you create a class schedule that’s too hectic, it will be more difficult for you to keep up with everything that needs to be done.
It happens often – especially during the first semester of freshman year. As new students, we get excited about the extracurricular activities, social opportunities, and campus life in general. However, we are quickly hit with the realization that as college students we have much more responsibility that requires saying “no” to somethings even if you don’t want to do so.
Therefore, to help alleviate this issue, make a list of all the things that you need to do each week. Then prioritize those things that you need to accomplish first. Try to plan both your study schedule and social life schedule ahead of time so that you don’t end up getting stressed out trying to do too much at once.`
Remember to get organized but don’t let your organization keep you from breaking out of your comfort zone and taking chances on new things.
Take Notes During Class
The best way to learn something is by actively participating in class and taking notes along the way. This will help you remember things that you learn in class and can also help you achieve your academic goals.
Taking notes during class can also help you prepare for the final exam. In addition, it’s a great way to review the material that you learned so that you don’t forget anything when it comes time to take the final.
If you are more into notetaking apps there are a ton out there. Consider OneNote, Notion, and more.
Now, if you hate taking notes like I do, consider just recording the audio or video of your class. Some professors won’t be okay with the video recording but the audio recording should be fair game. I used this trick during a ton of my economics classes and it was a great way to study on the go. I would listen to the classes kind of like an audiobook when I was out and about.
Other times, when I was doing a dedicated study session, I would review the simple notes I took in class and create greater detailed notes based on the audio. It served as a great way for me to study efficiently and effectively.
Create Flexible Study Schedules
To do well on your exams, you should take developing a study schedule seriously. Some people might say just dedicate three hours a day to studying and you will be fine. However, trying to study for such a long period without any breaks is not usually sustainable. You could instead try and study for set time intervals for studying. Maybe you will study for 45 minutes and then take a break. Rinse and repeat. Or you can create study schedules based on when you actually take your classes. So, if you are taking finance on Tuesday and Thursday, but have Psych 101 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, you could schedule time to study for the class right after leaving it or the day before taking it. You have options.
Now if you are someone who would rather study for 3 hours back to back, go for it. This may seem like a lot at first, but it will actually become easier as you get into the swing of things especially as it gets closer to finals week. Just remember that it’s a good idea to take a break from your studies for a few days if you are spending so much time daily studying. This will give you a chance to recharge so you can get back to studying without feeling burnt out.
Now, I can’t say I subscribed to this particular study method, but I did block out larger studying blocks for myself on weekend mornings. I found those were times when I was extremely productive. So I’d spend multiple hours working on school work during that time. The particular method that I followed was the Pomodoro Technique. I have written a separate article about this topic so, I’ll link it below if you are interested in learning more about this particular time management technique.

Make Friends Early On
Making friends is an essential part of the college experience. It can be challenging to meet new people in a new environment, but with time and effort, you’ll become more comfortable. It’s important to put yourself out there and actively seek opportunities to connect with others.
Even if the people you initially meet don’t seem like a perfect fit, it’s worth making the effort to get to know them. You never know what valuable connections or experiences may arise from these new relationships. Joining clubs and student organizations is an excellent way to meet people who share your interests and passions. Attending on-campus events and celebrations can also help you build a social network and make new friends. By taking these proactive steps, you’ll be well on your way to establishing a fulfilling social life during your college years.
Avoid Late Night Studying
While it may seem like a good idea to stay up late studying for upcoming midterms and finals, it’s actually much better to go to bed early and get a good night’s sleep. Prioritizing sleep over late-night cramming sessions can significantly benefit your academic performance. Getting adequate rest will help you stay alert, and focused, and avoid becoming distracted while you study. It will also make you feel more refreshed and less stressed, allowing you to give your studies your full attention. Improving your sleep habits and getting plenty of rest will enhance your focus, concentration, and overall energy levels.
Remember, you have plenty of time post-college to stress about life. Don’t worry, it’s coming, but for now, make the most of your freshman year by taking care of your mind and body through proper sleep hygiene. A good night’s sleep is a crucial ingredient for academic success.
Pay Attention to Your Health
Eating healthy foods and getting regular exercise are important aspects of your health that you should take seriously during your college years.
Poor nutrition and lack of exercise can lead to serious health problems that can affect your ability to enjoy your studies and even jeopardize your future health.
It’s important to make time for regular exercise and eat a well-balanced diet so that you can maintain your energy levels and remain healthy throughout your college career. Remember poor health makes it extremely difficult for all college students to prepare for freshman year, let alone survive it.
