The Ultimate Checklist For Long-Distance Moving
Embarking on a long-distance move can be an overwhelming experience, but with thorough planning and a comprehensive checklist, you can ensure a seamless transition to your new home.
In this guide, we’ll share the most effective strategies to tackle your long-distance move, from organizing essential documents to settling into your new living space.
I’ve talked a ton about moving, but I want to give make sure I share a clear moving checklist for any young adults looking to do a cross-country move or a regular long distance move. So, let’s get started with your to-do list!
Two Or More Months Before The Big Move
Create A Moving Plan
Determine your targeted moving date and set a realistic moving budget for your cross-country or interstate relocation. Research and compare quotes from professional movers or reputable moving companies, evaluating the additional services they may offer to facilitate your out-of-state move, such as packing, loading, transportation, and unloading assistance.
A major part of determining your moving plan also relates to how you will go about packing and organizing your home in preparation for the upcoming move. You needed to determine the best way for you to pack and track all of your belongings. Are you going to do a color-coded inventory system, use a master inventory list method, or something else? How about the packing order of the rooms? These are things that you must consider when developing your moving plan.
I recommend visiting your local hardware store or Home Depot and purchasing various colored duct tape. The different colored tapes can serve different purposes. For instance, you could assign a specific color to each room in your new home, which can help with organizing the packing process. Alternatively, you can use the varied colors to indicate the urgency of certain items, allowing you to prioritize the packing and moving of essential items when needed. This color-coding strategy can provide valuable flexibility during the packing stage, ensuring a more efficient and organized move.

Start Decluttering Your Old Home
Declutter your home by organizing a garage sale or donation drive to get rid of unwanted items. This is an excellent way to lighten the load and minimize the number of possessions you need to move for your upcoming interstate move. Holding a garage sale allows you to earn some extra cash from selling items you no longer need while donating unused belongings to local charities or non-profit organizations can also be a rewarding experience and help you streamline your move. By decluttering and parting with items you don’t use regularly, you’ll reduce the overall volume and weight of your moving inventory, making the packing and transportation process much easier and more efficient.
If you are wondering how to go about decluttering, I usually follow the rule of thumb where If I have not used an item within the last 3 months, I give it away or throw it away. The only exception is for more seasonal items. I’m not going to throw away my Holiday decor. That would be insane of me.
Notify Important Contacts, Parties, and Services
Notify the United States Postal Service of your change of address to ensure your mail gets forwarded to your new location. Additionally, update your new address with all relevant financial institutions, such as banks, credit card companies, and investment firms. Reach out to your utility providers, including electricity, gas, water, and internet/cable, to update your address and set up service in your new home. Inform your insurance providers, including health, auto, and homeowner’s/renter’s insurance, of your address change. Furthermore, notify your children’s schools to gather any necessary school records that need to be transferred. Finally, make sure to contact close family members, friends, and any other important parties to let them know your new address and contact information.

Two to Six Weeks Before The Big Move
Preliminary Packing
Gather a variety of packing supplies to protect your belongings during the move. This includes bubble wrap, packing paper, and packing tape to properly cushion and secure fragile items and valuables.
Start your packing plan by boxing up non-essential items and clearing out storage areas. Label each box clearly with the name of the room or contents it contains, and make note of the new residence it’s destined for. This labeling system will help ensure a smooth, hassle-free move to your new home.
Hire Professional Movers or Rent a Moving Truck
When deciding on the best option for your household goods, carefully consider the benefits and drawbacks of hiring a full-service moving company versus a DIY move. A full-service company can handle all the heavy lifting and logistics, but may come with a higher price tag. A DIY move using a rental truck offers more flexibility and control but requires more time and effort on your part.
Once you’ve decided on the right moving approach for your needs, confirm your reservations for professional movers or a moving truck. Be sure to review the company’s policies and terms, paying close attention to their handling of fragile items, as well as any special considerations for cross-country or out-of-state moves. This will help ensure a smooth and successful transition to your new home.
Schedule Utility Transfers or Inform Them of Cancellations
Arrange with utility companies, such as electricity, water, internet, and any other relevant service providers, to transfer your existing accounts from your current home to your new house in the new city or state. Make sure to plan ahead and schedule these utility transfers well in advance of your move date, ensuring that essential services like power, water, and internet will be active and ready to go by the time you arrive at your new residence.
A Week Before Moving To Your New Place
Pack All Of Your Essentials and Important Documents Separately
Pack an essential items box with a change of clothes, toiletries, important documents like your ID and insurance cards, any necessary medications, chargers for your electronic devices, snacks and drinks to sustain you, and any other personal items you’ll need for the first night and next few days in your new home. This will ensure you have easy access to the necessities as you settle into your new place, making the transition smoother and more comfortable.
Final Clean And Home Prep
Before moving out of your old home, it’s important to thoroughly clean the entire space to leave it in pristine condition for the next occupants. This final step not only makes a great impression but can also potentially help you earn back your rental deposit. Meticulously clean all rooms, scrubbing the bathrooms, vacuuming the floors, and wiping down all surfaces to make the space shine brightly before handing over the keys. Ensuring the home is spotless demonstrates your respect for the property and can go a long way in maintaining a positive relationship with your landlord or the new tenants. Taking the time to clean thoroughly shows you care about the home and want to leave it in excellent shape, which can make the transition smoother for everyone involved.
Prepare For Moving Day
Confirm your travel plans in advance and be sure to download your route on Google Maps, Waze, or another reliable navigation app. It’s important to account for any potential traffic delays, construction zones, or inclement weather conditions that could impact your travel time and complicate your journey to your new home.
In addition to confirming and preparing your travel arrangements, create a comprehensive moving binder that includes detailed contact information for your hired movers or moving truck rental company, a detailed inventory list of all the items you’ll be transporting, and any other important documentation or details you’ll need to reference throughout the moving process. Keeping all of this critical information organized in a single binder will help ensure a smooth, stress-free transition to your new home and state.
Moving Day
Perform an Inventory Check
Before leaving your current home for the final time, conduct a thorough walkthrough to carefully check every room and ensure no specific items have been forgotten or left behind. Closely monitor the entire loading process with your hired movers, making certain that your valuable and fragile possessions are handled with the utmost care and attention. Utilize a comprehensive inventory list to meticulously track and record the status of all your household goods, from large furniture to small personal items, guaranteeing that everything arrives safely at your new home in the same pristine condition.
After Moving Day
Settle Into Your New Location
When you arrive at your new home, start by unpacking your essential items first. Take a methodical approach, working through each room one by one. This organizational technique can help you avoid the last-minute stress and chaos that often comes with a big move, allowing you to settle into your new home more smoothly and easily.
Once you’ve unpacked the essentials, take some time to explore your new neighborhood. Familiarize yourself with the local area by locating nearby grocery stores, restaurants, library (more about why next) and other amenities that will be part of your daily routine. Additionally, be sure to update your driver’s license to reflect your new state of residence as soon as possible.
Go To Your Local Library
I strongly believe in supporting your local library. It’s a great way to get a sense of the community you’ve joined. Libraries often have calendars listing their own events as well as upcoming local happenings. This can be true whether you’ve moved to a small town or a big city. No matter where you end up, your library can be an excellent resource for meeting new people, discovering local clubs, and establishing your new life. So, whether you’re looking to attend a book club, learn a new skill, or simply find a quiet place to read, your library is a valuable asset as you settle into your new surroundings. I encourage you to explore all that your local library has to offer as you start this new chapter in your life.

More Things To Consider As You Plan Your Long-Distance Move
Insurance And Professional Movers vs DIY
Moving insurance is a good idea for long-distance or cross-country moves to ensure peace of mind, especially when dealing with professional movers. You do not want to hire a professional moving company without first insuring the items that you are moving.
There are a lot of moving insurance options available, so be sure to research the best one for your needs. Now, if you already have personal property insurance you might already have coverage for your items during a move. You just need to review your personal property insurance policy to see if that is the case.
As for deciding on taking the DIY route to do a long-distance move versus hiring full-service movers, I suggest that you keep an open mind. While do-it-yourself moves may seem more affordable at first glance, professional moving companies are often aware of the competitive landscape and price their services competitively. It’s worth thoroughly exploring what professional moving companies can offer and carefully comparing their costs to the DIY option.
You may be pleasantly surprised to find that hiring full-service movers is only slightly more expensive than handling the move yourself. If the prices are comparable, going with a professional moving company can be a wise decision to ensure a smooth and successful move.
Professional movers have the expertise, equipment, and resources to efficiently and safely transport your belongings, taking the burden off your shoulders. Additionally, a reputable moving company will likely have a complete checklist that you can also use to help you with your planning process for the move.
Ultimately, weighing the pros and cons of DIY versus professional movers can help you make the best decision for your specific needs and budget.
Creating a Moving Budgeting
In the first step, I mentioned that you need to create a moving budget as part of your moving plan. I only briefly mentioned this action so I want to be sure that I take the time to elaborate and explain what this looks like in reality. When budgeting for your move, it’s important to carefully consider all the potential expenses you may incur.
Start by listing out all the anticipated costs, which can include hiring professional movers to handle the heavy lifting, renting a truck or van to transport your belongings, purchasing packing supplies like boxes and tape, and covering any utility or internet setup fees. Don’t forget to factor in any state-specific registration costs or taxes related to your move as well.
Even if you plan to handle the physical aspects of the move yourself, there are still numerous expenses that need to be accounted for in your overall moving budget. This can include the costs of any temporary housing you may need during the transition period, as well as the potential impact on your cost of living once you’re settled in your new location.
Additionally, it’s wise to research how the cost of living may change, particularly when it comes to essentials like healthcare and medical providers. For example, a routine dental visit in a state like Georgia will likely be significantly less expensive than the same service in a major metropolitan area like Washington, DC, assuming you’re able to find an in-network provider in your new location.
Carefully considering these types of cost differences can help you budget more accurately and avoid unexpected financial burdens as you settle into your new home.
Putting It All Together
With thorough preparation and this moving checklist, your long-distance move can be a smooth transition. Attending to the small details, such as staying organized and allotting sufficient time, will make all the difference. By following this detailed guide, you can ensure a hassle-free move and embrace the new opportunities that await you in your new home. Embracing the change and looking forward to the possibilities in your new location can help make the transition more exciting and less daunting. Remember to approach the move with a positive mindset, and you’ll be well on your way to settling into your new surroundings and making the most of this new chapter in your life.
